Standing water at the bottom of a dishwasher does not always identify one failed part. The cause can be as simple as a cycle interruption or a filter that needs cleaning, but it can also involve the drain path, pump, control system or installation. Start with the checks you can make without removing panels or working around live wiring.

First, confirm what “not draining” means

A small amount of clean water below the filter area can be normal on some models. A visible pool covering the bottom of the tub, dirty water returning after the cycle, or water that remains after a cancel-and-drain command points to a drainage problem.

Before changing anything, note when the problem appears. Did the cycle stop after a power interruption? Does the machine make a humming sound when it should drain? Did the issue begin after a garbage disposal was installed? These details make the diagnosis more useful.

Safe dishwasher checks you can make

1. Finish or cancel the current cycle

Some dishwashers hold water between stages. Close the door completely and use the model’s cancel or drain command. If the display shows an error code, photograph it before resetting the appliance.

2. Inspect the removable filter

Turn the dishwasher off and follow the owner’s manual for removing the user-cleanable filter. Look for food debris, labels, glass or other material that can restrict water flow. Rinse the filter and reinstall it in the correct locked position. Do not reach into hidden pump openings or force parts that do not release normally.

3. Check the sink and visible drain connection

If the kitchen sink or disposal is also draining slowly, the problem may be outside the dishwasher. Look only at the visible hose path under the sink. A sharply kinked hose can restrict drainage. Do not disconnect plumbing if you cannot safely control the water or restore the connection without leaks.

4. Confirm the door can latch

A dishwasher may stop before the drain stage when the door does not close or latch correctly. Check that a rack, utensil or tall dish is not preventing full closure. Do not bypass the latch or operate the machine with the door open.

What different symptoms can suggest

  • No drain sound: the cycle, door switch, control or power supply may not be calling for drainage.
  • Humming without water movement: the pump may be obstructed or unable to move water.
  • Water drains and returns: the hose routing, sink connection or check-valve system may need inspection.
  • Leak during draining: stop using the machine and check for visible water around the cabinet.
  • Repeated drain code: save the exact code and full model number because meanings vary by model.

When to stop and request dishwasher repair

Stop using the appliance if water reaches flooring or cabinetry, an electrical smell is present, the breaker trips, or the machine leaks during a drain attempt. Internal pump testing, electrical measurements and removal of built-in panels should be left to a qualified technician.

A technician may need to inspect the drain pump, impeller, check valve, hose routing, wiring and control signals. Similar symptoms can have different causes, so replacing a pump based only on standing water can waste time and money.

Dishwasher drainage FAQ

Should I pour drain cleaner into a dishwasher?

No. Household drain chemicals can damage appliance components, create hazardous residue and make later service less safe.

Can I keep running cycles until the water clears?

Repeated cycles can increase the risk of overflow or leakage. If a cancel-and-drain attempt and user-cleanable filter check do not help, stop and request diagnosis.

Is a little water under the filter normal?

Some models retain a small amount of water in the sump area. Check the owner’s manual. Water covering the tub floor, smelling stale or returning after drainage deserves closer inspection.
